William Daniel Simmons was born July 9, 1839, to Hatton and Esther Simmons in Laurel, Ohio. He served in the Civil War with Co. D of the 153rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry (National Guard) and returned to farm the family land in Laurel. He married Mary Elizabeth Allen who was born July 9, 1849. She was educated at Women’s College in Oxford, Ohio and taught school in New Richmond, Ohio. She was a member of the Laurel Ladies Aid. Together William and Mary worked in support of the Laurel Methodist Church, where their names are permanently inscribed in the stained-glass window in the entry. They had four daughters: Harriet, Anna and twins Ida and Bertha, and one son, Charles J.A. Simmons. William D. Simmons died February 9, 1924, and Mary E. Simmons died in February of 1942. The couple are interred at the Laurel Cemetery, Clermont County, Ohio.
