Valentine Kattus was born to Francisci Katus and Mariae Stoltz Katus and was christened February 10, 1829 at the Roemisch-Katholische (Roman Catholic Cathedral) in the village of Kandel, in what is now the district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. This town is very close to the Rhine River and French border. It appears that Valentine and his two brothers, Ferdinand and Franz, immigrated to the U.S. most likely in the late 1840's and arrived at the port of New Orleans. Valentine married Katherina "Catherin" Schweitzer (or Schweizer)* on November 28th, 1852 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Catherin Schweitzer was born on, or about, November 22, 1836.
Valentine "Katus" and Catherine "Schweizer" marriage certificate, Hamilton County. Notice the spelling of "Katus/Schweizer"* and it seems as though they lied about Catherin's age.
*Both names - Kattus and Schweitzer, are missing a "t" on the marriage certificate, however the "t" appears in both names in all death records/headstones. It is unclear as to why this is. I beleive that either they were lyiing about their identities somewhat, or someone else filled out this form and mispelled their names.
Another possibility is that this is a recreation of a destroyed record. There was a fire and water damage event that destroyed many records that were created after the date of this marriage and many records had to be recreated.
Valentine and Catherin had 6 children - Caroline, Joseph, Maria, Louisa, Frank and Charles. Tragedy struck the Kattus family in 1866 when Catherin died during childbirth. The child was named but also perished. She and mother were interred at St. Mary's (like most of the Kattus family).
Valentine remarried a woman named Catherine Steidel who he had two more children with - Valentine Jr. and Adolph. On the 1870 census Valentine listed his occupation as Butcher. His wife Catherine's occupation was listed as House Keeper, and daughter Caroline was listed as a seamstress. The value of real estate listed by Valentine was $1200 and his personal estate value was $1300 (a little greater that $60,000 in today's dollars). The rest of the children with the exception of Valentine, Jr. (who was 5 months old) were reported as attending school.
Valentine Kattus died December 17th, 1889. Catherine died August 30, 1899. Both are interred at St. John Cemetery, Cincinnati, Oh.
Valentine's last address was 731 Elm Street, Cincinnati. The city renumbered every address between 1895 and 1896, so this address does not align with current addresses. It appears this address in 1870 was on the west side of Elm Street, very near the intersection of McMicken in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Over-the-Rhine (OTR) was the German area of Cincinnati at this time.
